Since the 1st Chopin Competition which took place during the winter of 1927, the Competition has highlighted the Polish composer’s works and rewarded its best interpreters. The Competition takes place every five years in Warsaw. It has helped to discover such talents as Lev Oborin, Bella Davidovich, Adam Harasiewicz, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich, Garrick Ohlsson, Mitsuko Uchida, Krystian Zimerman, Yundi, Rafał Blechacz, Yulianna Avdeeva and Daniil Trifonov.
84 competitors have been selected to participate in the First Stage of the Competition. 15 of the young pianists hail from Poland and China respectively, but the other nations represented also include Japan, South Korea, the United States of America, Canada, United Kingdom and Italy. Judged for both their technical skills and their understanding of the Chopin “soul”, the candidates will be competing against one another from October 3 to October 20. Following the last day of the Grand Finale on October 20, the Prizes will be awarded. The winners are chosen by an international jury comprising great pianists (including Adam Harasiewicz, Martha Argerich, Janusz Olejniczak, Dina Yoffe, Dang Thai Son and Yundi, all of whom are Prize-Winners from previous Competitions), teachers, pedagogues and specialists in Chopin’s music.
